The Major Leadership Theories

Leadership

Leadership is a quality, versatile subject, and a mix of different variables decides why a few people are effective pioneers.

Leadership Qualities

  • let’s discuss some leadership qualities

Bravery

“Courage is rightly considered the foremost of the virtues, for, upon it, all others depend.” – W.Churchill

Courage means to reach your Aim, and you are ready to take risks even if there is no guarantee of success. Because every step we carry in our life or business is the risk of some kind.

Vision

“Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.” – Jack W.

The great leaders are those who are best in visualization. They are best in strategic planning, and they have an idea that what they are trying to achieve, and they are on which track. The people who have the vision are extraordinary.

Making Strategies

“Strategy is not the consequence of planning, but the opposite: it’s the starting point.” – Henry M.

In making strategies, great leaders are terrific. This leadership quality is paramount. They are good at predicting and know that what will be the condition of the company in the future or incoming next three months where their company will stand in the market. Only leaders have the quality of making the trends to be followed by other companies and their rivals. They are always prepared to face any issue in the market because of their quality of strategic planning.

Focus: Leaders always focus on the situation and needs of the company. He focuses on how the desired goal is achieved by him and by the others. And it is only possible when he will pay attention to the strengths he and other followers have. He will work on how the company will be successful in the market, so he ensured that everyone is working excellent by using the time virtually.

Commitment and Passion

If a leader wishes to see his team should work with all their efforts and passion, that first the Leader he has to be passionate about it. You cannot motivate your followers to attain the goals if they see a lack of passion or commitment in you.

What are Leadership skills?

The skills a person use when directing other people to attain particular shared aims. Leadership skills help to motivate all other people working with you in specific tasks according to a set timetable or plan. Either you are in a leading role or a managing role. Grouping of many diverse skills that are working together makes leadership skills.

Here are some skills that must be in the Leader’s personality.

Truthfulness

Integrity or truthfulness is a skill a person should have either he is working in court, fighting in a field, or working in an office. How can a leader lack this skill when he expects his followers to be honest with their work? Also, companies only hire those people who have honesty trait. Truthfulness also includes when a leader is making choices in a company that will help the company to make a positive image.

Decisiveness

A leader should be determined in his work. Leaders making quick decisions makes them successful leaders. With experience and time, a person learns how to make an effective decision. If you don’t have essential information to make a decision, but when you become more familiar with your particular industry, you will make decisions faster.

Transparency

The Leader should be transparent if you want to win the hearts of your followers. He should openly share the information with team members instead of hiding information from them. Followers will love to work with leaders, and they put their all efforts to attain a set goal only when the Leader gives visibility and clarity to followers

For becoming a successful leader, you should have the ability to understand the pain and problems of your followers.

Good Communicator

To achieve the Aim, the Leader should communicate his vision with the team so they can know what strategies should be used to achieve the goal. That is a quality of an excellent leader to share his message efficiently to the team. Proper communication is a skill because words ere very effective to inspire and to get the best results from your team. If there is a communication gap between the Leader and the team, things will not work efficiently, and they won’t be able to attain the goal.

Types of Leadership

Autocratic

This kind of leadership style is someone who is centered virtually on outcome and proficiency. This style is also known as the authoritarian style. The phrase most indicative of this style of Leadership is “do as I say.” In this style, the Leader makes decisions on his own or with few trusted people, and he also expects those members will do exactly what they are asked.

These leaders fit into the example of military commanders. This style makes employees feel restricted and suppress creativity. This style stinks. No one feels easy to work in an environment where there are limited rules and regulations which you have to follow and are not allowed to raise your voice for opinion. Even if members know they are going in the wrong direction, they just go blindly.

Laissez-Faire Leadership or Hands-off

“laissez-faire” is a term from the French language that exactly translates to “let them do,” and leaders who implement this style nearly give all the powers to their followers. The Leader put his little or no supervision.

This style is effective when you have started a new set up, and you don’t make firm deadlines or rules. The Leader put his trust in team members. He just focuses on the overall working of the organization. This leadership style is very successful if the members are experienced and well trained, and each person acts as the role of Leader.

Democratic Leadership

The democratic leadership style is the combination of the autocratic types and laissez-faire types of leaders. That is sometimes known as the participative style. A democratic leader is someone before making any decision to let his team members give their views and feedback. This style engages team members as they feel their voice is heard, and their contribution matters a lot in the development of the organization. This style is best as it drives participation and discussion.

Transformational Leadership

In this type, the morality and motivation of followers are increased by the leaders.

This style focuses on directing efforts of others through rewards, structures, and tasks. The Leader helps their followers to move forward to achieve the goals. He changes plans and strategies to adjust assignments and give tips to gain a positive effect. In this style, the followers are highly motivated to attain their goals, as this style is highly inspirational.

Servant Leadership

This style explains that when team members feel professionally and personally fulfilled, they’re progressively compelling and bound to deliver extraordinary work normally. As in this style, the Leader attains higher levels of respect as their focus is on employee cooperation, happiness, and satisfaction.

A servant leader puts the employee’s needs first. According to one of the research, this style is practicing in top-ranking organizations, and these organizations are exceptionally positioned due to their authority style and following. Instead, the people serve the Leader in this style, and the Leader serves the people.

Situational Leadership

Kenneth Blanchard and Paul Hersey explained this leadership style. It refers to when the Leader adopts the technique according to the situation of the organization. In this style, it’s totally up to the leaders to change his style, not the followers, to adapt to the leaders’ style.

Margaret Wheatley: “Leadership is a series of behaviors rather than a role for heroes.”

Situational Leadership is an adaptable and flexible style. For pioneers, this style is best as it

allow and support the pioneers to pick any style according to their objectives of the work environment.

Theories of Leadership

Great Man Theory

Thomas Carlyle proposed this theory. According to this theory, the leaders are not trained or made. They are born with leading traits and qualities. Leadership is an innate gift. These leaders have unique attributes as charisma, confidence, communication skills, social skills, and intellect. Leaders can be defined as mythic, courageous, and intended to ascend to Leadership when the circumstance emerges. Thomas Carlyle said, “The history of the world is the biography of great men.”

For example, people like Abraham Lincoln, Mr. Jinnah, Mahatma Gandhi did not get any training for Leadership, but they influenced masses.

Trait Theory of Leadership

According to this theory, people are either born or are made with certain traits that will make them do exceptionally well in leadership roles. They have traits qualities such as the sense of responsibility, creativity, intelligence, and other attributes that puts anyone in the shoes of a good leader. This theory explains behaviors and personality traits that contribute to Leadership. The issue is that people may have comparable characteristics yet end up as very different and surprising leaders. Many people with the same behavior and personality end up with becoming one Leader and other with followers.

Contingency Theories

In all types of situations, the same leadership style is not suitable. So this theory explains the importance of leadership styles depending on the situation they find themselves in. One Leader can perform best in one state but maybe failing in other conditions, so the Leader should be flexible so he can attain the role of Leader according to the situations.

Situation Theories

Situational theories, see leaders adapt to the situation they find themselves in, like Contingency theories. The difference is that in accordance with the change in the condition, the Leader looked upon to change their leadership style.

They remember the change for the inspiration of the Leader just as the abilities of people who are followers. Leaders may change their supposition about their supporters, their circumstances, and their mental perspective and enthusiasm.

It states that for all situations, you cannot have one leadership style. It depends on the conditions of what style you will adopt.

Participative Theories

According to this theory, the best leadership style is when you take input and views from your followers. Leaders should discuss with all team members to take feedback from everyone, analyze the given information, and reach the decision. By listening to all members, followers will feel they are valued.

As it involves collective responsibility and involvement to attain a particular goal, this theory breaks the hierarchical distance between the Leader and group members

The transactional idea of Leadership: Do or Die

Max Weber and Bernard M. Bass explain this theory. The foundation of the idea is the concept of rewards and punishments. You will reward your members or give sentences depending on whether they achieve the goal or not set by you. According to psychologists, human needs are represented in the form of a pyramid.

Sleep and food are the basic needs that are at the bottom of the pyramid. As you go up to achieve the needs, it will become more and more difficult. In short of moving on the second level, one has to work hard.

As a transactional leader, you have to focus on the bottom of the pyramid for your team members. You will make sure that you accomplish the financial security and physiological needs of your group.

In this style, with no emotional bond, the relationship between you and your group is temporary.

In this style, leader group members are motivated and work in their self-esteem. As the members work hard to achieve their goals in a short time, their productivity will also increase.
